VR Setup Guide: Beginner (Under $700 Excluding Doll)

The beginner stack prioritizes one thing: every component works out of the box with free software. Total: under $700 excluding the doll and PC.

The shopping list

  1. Meta Quest 3S ($299) — same passthrough story as Quest 3 for MR basics, lower price
  2. The Handy ($250) — script sync without configuration
  3. Total: ~$550 — add $100 buffer for a USB-C charging hub and a low-profile phone/tablet stand

Skip at this level: trackers, PCVR, OSR platforms, haptic vests. None of it blocks the core experience.

Setup order

  1. Headset: create Meta account, enable developer-unneeded defaults, set up boundary
  2. Handy: pair in its app, calibrate stroke length (this matters more than any later tuning)
  3. Install Intiface Central (free) on your phone or PC; connect the Handy
  4. Pick content with script support; load scripts in XToys (browser, free) or MultiFunPlayer (PC)
  5. First session: video + synced Handy, doll positioned for manual contact — this is the "Level 1" experience from our VR guide

What this stack can't do

No overlay of VR content on the doll, no positional tracking, no multi-axis motion. Those are the intermediate and enthusiast tiers. Budgets for those: $900–1,200 (trackers) and $1,500+ (PCVR + OSR).
