The core legal distinction
Nearly all regulation separates adult dolls (legal almost everywhere) from childlike dolls (banned or criminalized in a growing list of jurisdictions). The second category is where every law in this space points, and this publication categorically excludes such products.
United States
No federal ban on adult dolls; interstate obscenity principles apply. Childlike dolls are banned in a growing set of states (Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Dakota, Hawaii and others) and the federal CREEPER Act — passed by the House in 2018, reintroduced since — reflects the direction of travel. Practical note: order from US-based resellers to avoid customs inspection ambiguity.
United Kingdom
Adult dolls are legal to sell and own. Two specifics: importation of childlike dolls is criminal (up to 7 years), and in practice UK vendors keep catalogue heights at 140cm+ because borderline sculpts risk seizure at the border. UK buyers should buy domestic stock.
European Union
Adult dolls are legal throughout the EU; free movement of goods applies (the 1987 Conegate ECJ ruling forced the UK to end import bans on adult dolls — a landmark for the category). Customs checks focus on childlike products, which are illegal in several member states.
Other notable jurisdictions
- Australia: childlike dolls are criminalized (classified as child exploitation material; 2013+ confiscations). Adult dolls legal.
- South Korea: Supreme Court legalized sales in 2018, overturning a customs ban; adult dolls are legal since.
- China: legal, with a fast-growing domestic retail sector ("experience halls" since ~2020).
- Botswana and a few others: importation banned under obscenity statutes.
Practical rules for buyers
- Adult-only products: the realistic legal risks are customs seizure (rare, adult sculpts) and local decency ordinances — not prosecution.
- Buy from domestic or established international resellers; they filter catalogue to your jurisdiction's rules.
- Never order anything childlike — beyond legality, it is the single fastest way to have your parcel flagged.
